Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Question 1: In what ways does your media production use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

During the production of our product, we tried to conform to the typical codes and conventions of the rock genre. However this does not mean that we did not subvert the usual stereotypical rock video.

Aspects which conformed to typical Rock conventions:

Shots and Narrative:

One way in which we conformed to the typical rock video is with the shot types and narrative which we used and how the band is known to show emotion while performing. This is usually shown with them shouting lyrics to make the song come over with more power and aggression. We decided to use this within our video in order to represent the hobo's feelings at the beginning of the music video. The shot types that we used conform to the typical rock conventions as they are for the most part really quick fast paced shots especially during the time that the band is performing. This often happens in Rock music videos as the bpm (beats per minute) of the rock genre is very high on average.

Hairstyle:

Another way in which our production conformed to the usual sum41 rock image would be the hairstyle used by our main actor, Nathan Larkin. This was useful to us as the wig we used for the hobo can also be portrayed as a crazy rock/punk hairstyle which is common within most rock bands.

The third and final way in which the video conforms to the codes and conventions of the genre is the narrative of the song and how the narrative is portrayed within the video by cutting towards actual use of the instruments and also the story narrative. We also decided to keep this with how the hobo is running in order to show the story narrative. Towards the end it cuts to the band playing imaginary instruments along with the song in order to stick to the codes and conventions of rock bands playing instruments in their music videos while still keeping with the narrative, giving of the impression that the hobo is now leaving a dream hence why the instruments are imaginary.

Aspects which subverted typical Rock conventions:
Although we did try to make our music video conform to the general codes and conventions of a rock video throughout the majority of the production, there were still some parts in which we chose to subvert from the stereotypical rock video instead. These would include the editing and the storyline and how the flashback were used.

Storyline:
One way in which we subverted was with the use of flashbacks within the storyline. The majority of rock videos tend to focus on the present however with ours we decided to add in flashback scenes in order to enhance the idea that he was a normal person who went from a homeless person who is not respected to a man living his dreams and playing in a well established band with friends and has a place in life.

Editing:
Generally, Rock videos have fast editing and use alot of cut aways, each shot not having a long duration. However in our production we decided to use fairly slow editing with not many cut aways, each shot having a fairly long duration as we wanted the audience to focus more on the narrative and understand the meaning behind the video. Usually rock videos attract their audience more with their fast pace editing and unusual events.

Evaluation

From this lip syncing experience I have learnt that the shots need to quickly transition between each shot. If I had to do this task again the thing I would do differently is try to do many different shots rather than one long shot which lasts.

My Favorite Video

I like this video for a number of reasons. Not only because of the way it was filmed but more so the story behind the video. The video itself is made to show eminem's true return into the music industry.
The video shows Eminem living two lives. There is a period of quickly alternating shots showing him in a messy, disorganised basement which presumably represents his home and then him on a rooftop where he stands dangerously close to the edge. This segment represents his new found freedom which is being out from his ‘cage box’ to being free and in power. However, while Eminem is standing close to the edge on the rooftop, he takes another step forward after he sings, “And all those who look down on me I’m tearing down your balcony”. My interpretation of this can be seen in two different ways:
1. He gains more confidence in what he’s saying and shows this by stepping forward.
2. By him stepping forward, it symbolises that his words put him in more danger.

Analysis of Songs

THE SCRIPT - BREAKEVEN

This music video has a subtextual meaning, as there are some obvious elements as well as some that are not shown. For example the majority of the music video is shot in black and white which portrays his sadness about losing his love. I think that the reading overall is dominant because the theme of the video is based around his loneliness due to them breaking up which is shown by clips of them individually rather than being together. However, there some some negotiated elements throughout the video as flashbacks are shown of them being together which is shown through his thoughts and memories. This music video is an illustration video as he is lipsyncing to draw the attention onto him.

SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA - SAVE THE WORLD

This music video in my opinion has a subtextual meaning. This is because some parts are clearer than others. For example, the video is about people being saved from trouble which is clear, but it is not made clear why they are saved by dogs. I think this video has a negotiated reading. I belive the video is trying to convey that dogs are 'a man's best friend'; some may agree with this statement others may not.
